meet the geese

A citizen science toolkit for non-intrusive observation and field data collection of geese at ITU Pond

meet the geese citizen science toolkit at ITU Pond

This project aims to contribute to citizen science by observing the geese living in the ITU Pond. The proposed modular research kit enables the systematic and accessible documentation of geese’s physical conditions, behaviors, and interactions with their environment, allowing even non-expert participants to take part through guided questions, visual aids, and simple recording tools.

The kit consists of a tripod-mounted camera, a question/interaction device, and a carrying bag. The camera supports multiple observation modes, including temperature sensing and foot color tracking, while enabling both photo and video recording. Captured content can be reviewed through its built-in gallery. Thanks to its tripod system, the camera can be fixed for continuous observation, while also allowing handheld use for mobility.

The question device guides users through predefined questions, with responses stored in an internal archive. It also includes an audio recording feature, capturing both user input and environmental sounds such as goose vocalizations. The E-ink display ensures readability under sunlight and long battery life, supporting extended outdoor use.

Together, these components form a cohesive and non-intrusive system that positions technology as a supportive tool, enabling users to observe, record, and engage with wildlife in a respectful and accessible way.
